It’s a Hot Summer for Private Aircraft Sales

There are many reasons why you or your company may be considering aircraft ownership if you are flying more than you anticipated this year. Summer travel continues to be a hot topic with all the uncertainty as the world opens back up. Major airlines continue to change schedules and drop routes. Commercial flights are fully booked with hundreds of passengers and thousands of touch-points you come in contact with during your entire flight process. Private jet charter welcomed many first-time flyers during 2020. Brokers, operators, and jet cards are introducing more blackout days, fully booked schedules on peak charter days, and higher fees. Increased booking windows and less availability of select aircraft are making an impact on the type of plane and experience you have come to expect. As the demand for travel significantly increased, so have private aircraft sales.

As a private jet owner, you are in control of the schedule, destination, and passengers on board – all without the wasted time waiting in long queues or navigating through crowded major airports.

Your aircraft is available whenever you want it, on your schedule.

BENEFITS OF OWNERSHIP

Tax Benefits

Potential for significant tax savings, including up to 100% bonus depreciation.

Privacy/Safety/Accessibility

Enjoy minimal touch-points, travel with only the passengers you choose, and have control over your aircraft’s schedule and availability.

Cost of Ownership

Managing your asset and planning for the future.

Tax Benefits

If your plan is to use your jet primarily for business, there are some potential tax benefits that can help offset the costs of the initial investment. On average, these deductions go above and beyond to help justify the sizable upfront purchase price.

Previously, businesses were able to recover up to 70% of a factory-new jet’s initial cost within three years time, based upon a disparity between the asset’s real-life rate of depreciation and accounting. In addition, a “bonus depreciation” was possible to speed up defined depreciation rates upwards of 50%. However, tax reform passed in late 2017 allows the potential for 100% bonus depreciation for the aircraft in the first year and applies to both new and used aircraft – a key benefit to those who can take advantage of the change. This means that after a business purchases a private jet, it can potentially depreciate the full purchase price of the aircraft immediately. Keep in mind, these potential tax deductions don’t apply to recreational/personal use of the aircraft. It is uncertain how long these tax incentives will remain in place, so many would-be aircraft buyers are choosing to take advantage of these current benefits before they go away.*

Privacy/Safety/Accessibility

Privacy

With the purchase of your own private jet, you can ensure a level of confidentiality and security above all other forms of personal or business travel. Whether it’s required due to your industry or a personal preference, owning your own aircraft places you in control of your personal and private travel requirements. Normally common among high-profile business professionals and celebrities, private jet travel is now becoming more widespread as privacy and personal information concerns are on the rise.

Safety

Private jet travel is extremely safe, but not all companies invest in the same level of standards. You want to work with a company like Latitude 33 Aviation who is among the top five percent of U.S. private jet charter operators to achieve the stringent ARGUS Platinum safety rating. However, safety concerns expand beyond the aircraft. You may have allergies or want to ensure a completely risk-free environment. You may experience sensitivities to perfumes or strong odors or have a compromised immune system. Perhaps you are concerned about your pet’s safety during flights or wary of not having the freedom to bring them along with you when traveling. Private jet ownership offers you the safety and convenience of controlling your surroundings by traveling consistently on your aircraft which is important for those with health concerns.

Accessibility

Accessibility is a huge deciding factor and an added plus for private aircraft owners. Are you having a difficult time securing an aircraft for your private charter flights? Are your charter rates or jet card rates continuing to climb? Are holiday and peak travel period surcharges exceeding your planned budget? Then ownership of a private aircraft is a perfect solution to remove limitations of accessibility for your personal or business life. Whatever your reason, owning a private aircraft will always supply the greatest opportunity for privacy, comfort, and flexibility. These preferences are major factors influencing the decision for many clients to move from chartering to private jet ownership.

Cost of Ownership

Attempting to become a jet expert overnight and purchasing an aircraft unassisted alone can be risky. Latitude 33 Aviation will help you select the perfect aircraft for your specific needs and introduce you to the latest aircraft models by industry-leading manufacturers. Whether you are looking for an all-new private jet or pre-owned aircraft for sale, our aviation company based out of Southern California walks you through the selection process to maximize your investment and minimize your risk. In some cases, the cost of ownership could possibly cost less than chartering or being a jet card member depending on your amount of travel.

When purchasing an aircraft, there are five primary categories of planes to choose from. The category is determined by factors like maximum range and passenger-carrying capacity:

Determining which aircraft category is right for you depends on various factors of your travel requirements. Are you traveling for business or pleasure? How many passengers do you normally travel with? How far away are your frequently traveled destinations?

For example, if you fly shorter local trips between 100-600 miles, a turboprop is a good choice. However, if you travel with a larger party of 11 or more passengers and want to cover longer distances nonstop, then a heavy jet is best-suited for that mission.

If you are thinking about buying a jet to charter out or for personal use, it’s best to include the following in your thought process: average trip length, typical and maximum number of passengers that will be flying, potential savings from chartering, factory-new or pre-owned aircraft, desired acquisition budget, etc.

Finding a private jet to purchase can be a daunting task to pursue alone. It will most likely have you wondering if you’re vetting out all the best aircraft on market or getting a good deal as there are few aircraft valuation tools that are easily accessible. Latitude 33 Aviation makes the entire aircraft purchase process seamless and enjoyable for a buyer. Our dedicated in-house aircraft market intelligence team will build a custom aircraft market report with curated jet options aligned to your specific needs and preferences. Our data is based on a proven mix of real-time market updates, industry trends, market reports, realistic cost of ownership, aircraft history, and comprehensive investigative research. This allows you to make an informed and confident decision on the purchase of a factory direct acquisition or a pre-owned private jet. Information in these reports include the aircraft’s manufacture year, serial number and registration, aircraft location, total number of airframe hours, days on market, condition of paint and interior, pricing expectations, and more. Our experts are upfront about the condition of each aircraft for sale, as we closely analyze maintenance history and inspection reports for a sound purchase. We will also assist with negotiations, inspections, FAA documentation, closing, and delivery of your new aircraft.

After purchasing an aircraft, there are ongoing costs for managing your private jet. These costs include but are not limited to hangar fees, fuel, landing fees, catering, hull insurance, liability insurance, crew and/or crew training, and average maintenance for parts and labor. When purchasing an aircraft, it is important to understand the total cost of ownership by evaluating not just the acquisition cost but also those for ongoing operations.

CHALLENGER 350 FUELED WITH SUSTAINABLE AVIATION FUEL (SAF)

Latitude 33 Aviation is proud to announce the acceptance of the first Bombardier customer aircraft to be delivered with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This award-winning 2019 Challenger 350 will also be the first on Latitude 33 Aviation’s fleet to be based in Seattle, Washington. The Challenger 350 is already one of the most fuel-efficient business aircraft in the world with its redesigned canted winglets that reduce drag and fuel burn, while the engines deliver increased thrust. Available for charter, this factory-new aircraft is leading the way towards a sustainable future for business aviation by mainstreaming the use of an alternative to traditional jet fuel.

THE BENEFITS OF SUSTAINABLE AVIATION FUEL (SAF)

What is Sustainable Aviation Fuel?

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is an alternative to traditional jet fuel. SAF is made by blending conventional kerosene with renewable hydrocarbon. Because it is certified as “Jet-A1” fuel, no modifications are required for the aircraft to use SAF.

Environmental Benefits

The use of SAF has been shown to provide great environmental benefits. Sustainable aviation fuel is nearly carbon-neutral over its life cycle because the burning fuel emits an equivalent amount of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere as do plants during the growth of biomass. SAF also contains fewer impurities, which results in a greater reduction of particulate matter emissions.

SAF can be produced from municipal waste that would otherwise be left to decompose in landfill sites. This avoids the use of petroleum and instead reuses the waste to power additional flights.

Economic & Social Benefits

SAF is mainly produced from feedstocks and therefore can be spread worldwide across several different feedstocks that have large amounts of unviable land for food crops. This can simultaneously reduce the exposure to the fuel cost volatility that comes with having a single energy source and introduce a new industry such as sustainable aviation fuel production to developing nations.

New Citation CJ4 Business Jet - Latitude 33 Aviation Growth in 2017

While growth in 2017 was expected to exceed previous years, the combination of unparalleled customer service, additional factory new aircraft added to the fleet, and industry tailwinds helped 2017 become a record-breaking year.

Latitude 33 Aviation has always offered bespoke aircraft brokerage services, but last year marked the expansion of the aircraft sales and acquisition division with the addition of a full-time sales team. When aircraft owners are looking to move up in aircraft capacity and capability, they choose Latitude 33 Aviation to oversee the sale of their current aircraft and acquisition of their next jet because of the company’s specialized industry experience. Unlike many other aircraft brokers, Latitude 33 Aviation does not just buy and sell aircraft – it manages, operates, and maintains a large fleet of jets which provides the company with in-depth operating knowledge of each specific jet.

The company has also developed close relationships with major business jet manufacturers such as Cessna/Textron, Embraer, and Bombardier. As an operator who accepts and operates many factory-new aircraft on an annual basis, Latitude 33 Aviation is regularly recommended by manufacturers to prospective aircraft owners or current owners who are looking for professional aircraft management services.

Latitude 33 Aviation 10 Year Story

In becoming San Diego’s only ARGUS Platinum safety rated private jet charter company, Latitude 33 Aviation continues to demonstrate its commitment to constant improvement to its clients, aircraft owners, and partners. Although the company has a perfect safety record, it wanted to raise the bar and challenge itself to meet the most stringent standards in the industry. In doing so, Latitude 33 Aviation became one of the few qualified operators that meet the standards to provide supplemental flight support to some of the world’s most well-known private flight companies.

How the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act Affect the Aviation Industry
Private Aircraft, Tax Cuts and Jobs Act

On December 22, 2017, the President of the United States signed The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Currently, the federal government imposes an excise tax on every commercial flight. Under this new legislation, the maintenance of a privately managed and operated plane would be exempt from this tax.

Below is the section of the bill which describes the tax breaks for aircraft owners:

The proposal exempts certain payments related to the management of private aircraft from the excise taxes imposed on taxable transportation by air. Exempt payments are those amounts paid by an aircraft owner for management services related to maintenance and support of the owner’s aircraft or flights on the owner’s aircraft.

Applicable services include support activities related to the aircraft itself, such as its storage, maintenance, and fueling, and those related to its operation, such as the hiring and training of pilots and crew, as well as administrative services such as scheduling, flight planning, weather forecasting, obtaining insurance, and establishing and complying with safety standards. Aircraft management services also include such other services as are necessary to support flights operated by an aircraft owner.”

Q: How does this new tax reform affect the aviation industry and purchase of private aircraft?

A: The acquisition of an aircraft for business could be depreciated at 100% of the cost within the first year of ownership. This is an immediate, important change from previous tax guidelines. For example, based on a marginal tax rate of 40% and a jet acquisition price of $5,000,000 there is a potential income tax savings of $2,000,000.

Q: Is there a difference between the acquisition of a pre-owned aircraft vs. a factory-new aircraft?

A: No, the tax reform applies to both new and pre-owned aircraft.

Q: Is there a cap or phase-out to deduction price point?

A: No, there is no purchase price point at which the tax advantage caps out. The tax benefits would apply to a seasoned jet owner upgrading to a Citation Longitude, as well as a first-time aircraft owner looking to purchase a single-engine turboprop aircraft.

Q: I would like to purchase an aircraft soon, should I wait?

A: Now is the perfect time to buy an aircraft as the new incentives are very advantageous. Although the new Tax Cut eliminates the like-kind exchange (1031 exchange) for aircraft transactions (in 2018 the Act will only allow the 1031 like-kind exchange for real property) and taxpayers will no longer be able to defer taxable gain on their aircraft when they wish to upgrade, the new tax cuts applicable to buying a new plane are immediate and significant.

Q: What if I wish to deduct entertainment expenses for my business aircraft?

A: Previously, deductions of entertainment expenses are only allowed if they directly relate to the taxpayer’s conduct of business. Starting in 2018, the new tax cut does not allow the deduction of entertainment expenses, regardless if it associated with the owner’s/taxpayer’s business.

Q: Great! I am ready to purchase my aircraft. Now what?

A: Contact the experts on our jet acquisition service team at 800-840-0310 or AircraftSales@L33Jets.comLatitude 33 Aviation is glad to help you through this process – we are an industry-recognized group of experts delivering professional, full-service aircraft ownership programs. What to Consider When Buying a Jet in Los Angeles

Buying your own private jet is a significant milestone and achievement. Whether you’ve decided to own your aircraft because you have far too many important business meetings outside of the San Diego, Los Angeles, and Southern California area and you need to save time, or because you simply don’t want to deal with the hassle of flying on commercial airlines ever again, a private jet means you are literally and figuratively above it all. There is no better way to minimize travel time, maximize productivity, arrive refreshed, and have ultimate control over your travel schedule than to purchase your own private jet. Of course, you want to make a wise financial investment, but there is a lot more to consider when buying an aircraft than the price tag.

Here are some of the more important factors you should consider when choosing the private jet that will be your oasis in the sky:

  1. Size — Bigger isn’t always better, but that is a preference that is entirely up to you. How many passengers will usually be flying with you? You might not have a need to travel around in an airliner-sized aircraft, but make sure the jet you buy feels comfortable to you. After all, you’re buying a jet because you don’t ever want to spend the flight between New York and L.A. with your knees pushed up against your chin.
  2. Range — How far will you regularly be traveling? What will be your most frequent destinations? Will you want to land at smaller, regional airports that are closer to your final destination than the major airports? It’s important to find a jet that can adequately handle all your travel needs.
  3. Features and luxury options — The sky is the limit when it comes to the options available in private jets. Will your personal jet come stocked with a wet bar and full entertainment package for leisure, or do you require satellite internet and phone service for business productivity? Even if you are not planning on doing much entertaining in the air, you will want to make sure you are as comfortable as you can be in the cabin.
  4. Crew — Depending on the size of your private jet and how you will be using it, larger aircraft may require a multi-person crew that includes several pilots, flight attendants, and mechanics, while smaller aircraft may be able to operate with just a single pilot. Also, you’ll want to think about whether your flight crew will be permanent employees or if you’ll hire them on a contractual, as-needed basis. This will likely depend on how often you intend to use your new asset.
  5. Operating costs — It is important to know ahead of time how much you will need to spend on maintenance, fuel, insurance, engine overhaul reserves, navigation database updates, and other ongoing costs for your new private jet. Some aircraft have low purchase prices, but high operating costs. It is important to have an aircraft expert assist you with your decision to help save you money in the long run. Depending on how frequently you use the plane, it may or may not be worth the ongoing costs for you.
  6. Buying or chartering?Buying a private jet is often a wise investment if you expect to be in the air often, but it’s still possible to travel in luxury without making such a large outlay of capital. Chartering a private jet on an as-needed basis may be a more appropriate choice, depending on your travel needs to and from Los Angeles, San Diego and the Southern California area. If you do not plan on flying at least 100-150 hours per year, chartering may be a better option. You will still reap many of the benefits of having a private jet, but without all of the responsibility that comes with ownership.
  7. Management — Jet ownership requires logistics such as hangar space to park the aircraft, proper vetting and training of flight crew, financial accounting, maintenance and inspection scheduling, aircraft cleaning, and refreshment supplies stocking as well as preparing the aircraft whenever you would like to fly. Some jet owners prefer to handle these activities themselves, while others opt to hire a professional private jet management company to handle these responsibilities. Aircraft management companies are also often able to provide discounts on fuel, insurance, and hangar space due to their size and buying power.
