WHAT TO DO IN SALT LAKE CITY
Visiting in the summer months means enjoying a plethora of outdoor activities, with hot days and mild evenings. The Utah Arts Festival in June includes an outdoor art show and live performances in downtown’s Library Square. Utah is well-known for its natural beauty, and opportunities to hike or meander through natural parks abound. The Red Butte Garden is especially popular, open year-round with seasonal events, classes, and concerts. Utah’s Natural History Museum is located here in Salt Lake City, offering over 5,000 artifacts on display and engaging exhibits for all ages that reach back into prehistoric history to tell Utah’s story. Don’t forget about the Great Salt Lake, of course, with plenty of fantastic fishing and boating!
During the colder months (generally December – March), the annual Christmas concert from the Mormon Tabernacle Choir can’t be missed, and the skiing in nearby Park City is world renowned. There is outdoor ice skating in Gallivan Center, and a Festival of Lights each year at Christmastime on Temple Square. The light show in the Temple Square is one reason why it is the most visited spot in all of Utah and is surely a sight not to be missed.
Salt Lake City also has a thriving art and performing arts culture, with plenty to enjoy throughout the year. Annual arts events include the Outdoor Garden Concert Festival in the Red Butte Garden, the Twilight Concert Series; on the Fourth of July each year the Sugar House Merchants Association hosts an Arts Festival with over 120 artists and craftsmen, followed by an evening full of live music and fireworks.
Salt Lake City is also a great place to visit for sports fans, featuring the NBA team, Utah Jazz, and the Triple-A baseball team, Salt Lake Bees. Just 28 miles east of Salt Lake City, you can visit the Olympic Park, where the 2002 Winter Olympics were hosted. The center continues to function as a training facility for athletes, and also houses two museums outlining Utah’s ski history, as well as showcasing Olympic memorabilia. Snap a photo in front of an Olympic torch before heading back to Salt Lake City for an unforgettable meal at a fine dining spot like Table X, Pago, or Stanza.
