The zoo is over 42 acres with many species native to tropical climates, as well as lush grounds bursting with fragrant, colorful indigenous plants and flowers. The Waikiki Aquarium is just down the road from the zoo and offers a fun environment to learn about the oceans of Hawaii and view the playful Hawaiian monk seals. Another outdoor activity not to miss while in Honolulu is a visit to the Pearl Harbor National Memorial. The lagoon harbor area is home to an aviation museum, as well as memorial sites for the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941; tours are offered daily.

Annual festivals and outdoor sporting events flourish in this tropical playground, with wintertime surfing tournaments, pro football and golf competitions, and even the Honolulu Festival each March. April through August in Honolulu will see the warmest weather, but also enjoyable events like the Lei Day Celebration and the Hawaii State Fair. As the fall brings ever-so-slightly cooler temperatures, more surfing competitions are held along with the Hawaii International Film Festival and the Hawaii Food and Wine Festival.

The food landscape on Oahu is decidedly unique with heavy influences from nearby Asian cultures while retaining its Native Hawaiian identity. Famous favorites include: poke – a main dish of Native Hawaiian cuisine, this dish is diced raw fish with other accompaniments, served as an appetizer or main course; SPAM musubi – a favorite snack food, composed of a slice of grilled SPAM on a block of white rice, wrapped in Japanese nori; and loco moco – a feature of contemporary Hawaiian cuisine, this dish is typically white rice topped with ground beef, a fried egg, and brown gravy. Within Honolulu, the Eggs ‘n Things restaurant is a very popular spot for all-day breakfast where you can find a traditional loco moco, as well as delectable pancakes and crepes.
One of the most beloved fine dining restaurants in Honolulu, Chef Mavro, was opened in 1998 by Marseille-born George Mavrothalassitis. The menu features French techniques and fresh, local produce with spectacular results, such as the award-winning salt-crusted onaga (red snapper). Every dish is also carefully and artfully paired with its perfect-match wine compliment. This is a can’t-miss dining experience you will need advance reservations to enjoy.
Two other highly-rated and beloved dining options are both located within the Halekulani Resort. La Mer, rated by Forbes Travel Guide as a five-star fine-dining experience, is the premier ocean-view restaurant of the Halekulani, offering Neoclassic French cuisine featuring local ingredients and fresh seafood. Reservations are highly encouraged for this epitome of fine dining, along with your most elegant evening wear. Orchids, Halekulani’s other ocean-view dining spot, is a more casually elegant option, serving three meals a day with a lovely afternoon tea Monday-Saturday. Sunday brunch in this beautiful location is very popular with a buffet and table-side Negroni cart.
Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko Olina is west of Honolulu, in an area where King Ka’mehameha once vacationed. The breathtaking beauty of the surrounding nature preserve and placid lagoons is still fit for a king. The Kahala Hotel and Resort is directly on the beach, at the base of Diamond Head.
