What to Do in Honolulu

Outdoor Activities

Outdoor activities abound in this island paradise, where near-perfect weather will entice you to spend your entire day outside, seeking new adventures. Try snorkeling in Hanauma Bay or ocean sports like stand-up paddleboarding or bodysurfing at Waikiki, Ala Moana Beach Park, and Sandy’s. Hiking Diamond Head crater, the iconic former volcano on the eastern side of Waikiki, will not only provide an unmatched view of Honolulu, but the 30-minute hike to the summit means time for additional explorations. Alternatively, the 20-30-minute walk through dense tropical forest to Manoa Falls culminates with a breathtaking waterfall at the end of the trail. Family outings to the Honolulu Zoo/Waikiki Aquarium are a great way to spend a day. The zoo is over 42 acres with many species native to tropical climates, as well as lush grounds bursting with fragrant, colorful indigenous plants and flowers. The Waikiki Aquarium is just down the road from the zoo and offers a fun environment to learn about the oceans of Hawaii and view the playful Hawaiian monk seals. Another outdoor activity not to miss while in Honolulu is a visit to the Pearl Harbor National Memorial. The lagoon harbor area is home to an aviation museum, as well as memorial sites for the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941; tours are offered daily.

Stay Local

For unique local opportunities, Honolulu’s Chinatown offers an immersive cultural experience, with both a market and fabulous dining. On the way you’ll have the chance to browse lei shops and artsy boutiques and walk through the hip Kakaako neighborhood with its eye-popping street murals. Ala Moana Center is the largest open-air shopping mall in the world and the epicenter of shopping in Honolulu with plenty of high-end shops and designer stores. Nearby, in the heart of Honolulu’s Waikiki beach resort and urban retail district, the Luxury Row shopping center on Kalakaua Avenue offers premium-brand stores like Chanel, Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, and much more. Iolani Palace, in downtown Honolulu, was built in 1879 by King Kalakaua as the opulent home for the last Hawaiian monarchs. It has been beautifully restored and is open for tours. Honolulu Museum of Art in downtown Honolulu houses contemporary exhibits and films or visit the Bishop Museum and immerse yourself in Hawaiian culture and history. Annual festivals and outdoor sporting events flourish in this tropical playground, with wintertime surfing tournaments, pro football and golf competitions, and even the Honolulu Festival each March. April through August in Honolulu will see the warmest weather, but also enjoyable events like the Lei Day Celebration and the Hawaii State Fair. As the fall brings ever-so-slightly cooler temperatures, more surfing competitions are held along with the Hawaii International Film Festival and the Hawaii Food and Wine Festival.

Food and Dining

The food landscape on Oahu is decidedly unique with heavy influences from nearby Asian cultures while retaining its Native Hawaiian identity. Famous favorites include: poke – a main dish of Native Hawaiian cuisine, this dish is diced raw fish with other accompaniments, served as an appetizer or main course; SPAM musubi – a favorite snack food, composed of a slice of grilled SPAM on a block of white rice, wrapped in Japanese nori; and loco moco – a feature of contemporary Hawaiian cuisine, this dish is typically white rice topped with ground beef, a fried egg, and brown gravy. Within Honolulu, the Eggs ‘n Things restaurant is a very popular spot for all-day breakfast where you can find a traditional loco moco, as well as delectable pancakes and crepes.

One of the most beloved fine dining restaurants in Honolulu, Chef Mavro, was opened in 1998 by Marseille-born George Mavrothalassitis. The menu features French techniques and fresh, local produce with spectacular results, such as the award-winning salt-crusted onaga (red snapper). Every dish is also carefully and artfully paired with its perfect-match wine compliment. This is a can’t-miss dining experience you will need advance reservations to enjoy.

Two other highly-rated and beloved dining options are both located within the Halekulani Resort. La Mer, rated by Forbes Travel Guide as a five-star fine-dining experience, is the premier ocean-view restaurant of the Halekulani, offering Neoclassic French cuisine featuring local ingredients and fresh seafood. Reservations are highly encouraged for this epitome of fine dining, along with your most elegant evening wear. Orchids, Halekulani’s other ocean-view dining spot, is a more casually elegant option, serving three meals a day with a lovely afternoon tea Monday-Saturday. Sunday brunch in this beautiful location is very popular with a buffet and table-side Negroni cart.

Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko Olina is west of Honolulu, in an area where King Ka’mehameha once vacationed. The breathtaking beauty of the surrounding nature preserve and placid lagoons is still fit for a king. The hotel offers planned activities like helicopter tours, along with hosting a full-service spa and five outstanding dining options.

The Kahala Hotel and Resort is directly on the beach, at the base of Diamond Head. Resting a few miles from any other hotel, the 800 feet of pristine beachfront feels like a private escape while still keeping you conveniently near the area’s attractions and nightlife. With three outstanding restaurants and a world-class spa, plus it’s very own Dolphin Lagoon, this resort is a luxurious standout.

The Modern Honolulu by Diamond Resorts is a hip and modern getaway with flair. Keeping you near the shopping and beaches of Waikiki, the guest rooms are stylish and comfortable and the adults-only pool with infinity-edge and bar overlooking the Pacific will enchant you. Their on-site spa offers a full menu of treatments, while the lobby bar, The Study, features a rotating bookcase that opens to the swanky lounge, where cocktails are handcrafted and music is live, nightly.

The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Waikiki Beach offers the complete package of a luxurious home-away-from-home. Each residence is fully equipped with a kitchen and living room, as well as private balcony with vistas of the Pacific and the city of Waikiki. While not on the beach, this Ritz-Carlton is only a five-minute stroll from the beach, and even closer to Luxury Row. Their on-site sushi restaurant requires reservations for its highly-exclusive (and highly-coveted) ten seats, so book ahead.

Halekulani, on the west end of Waikiki, is one of the island’s most prestigious and treasured resorts. This historic five-acre property rests right on Waikiki Beach, offering an extraordinary escape that will feel remote, though keeping you centrally located to everything Honolulu has to offer (the resort is just a five-minute walk from Luxury Row).

Aulani, Disney’s family-friendly luxury resort & spa, is located approximately a 35-minute drive west of Honolulu, but certainly worth a mention here. It is a fabulous place to stay with the entire family or for couples who enjoy the legendary Disney experience and hospitality. Situated right on the sand in the Ko Olina area, this resort has activities for everyone.

Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (PHNL) – This airport is the largest among the Hawaiian Islands and is located in Honolulu. Many travelers will fly into Honolulu first before making the short trip to another of the islands.
