With sapphire-blue water and warm, golden sand, the beaches of both north and south Puerto Vallarta are perfect for relaxing and swimming. The Bay of Banderas has calm waters that are excellent for diving or snorkeling, or take a private sunset sailing tour across the bay. Water sports are always a great choice while on vacation to exotic tropical locales – Puerto Vallarta’s offerings include scuba diving, surfing, fishing, and snorkeling.

Downtown Puerto Vallarta is full of popular sightseeing destinations and famous monuments. The state of Jalisco has declared the downtown area a cultural heritage site and indeed the cobblestone streets and iconic structures whisper of generations past and cherished traditions. Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe church (Parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe), City Hall, and the Main Square are favorite places to visit. A well-known symbol of the city that can be seen from almost anywhere in downtown is the tower which rises above the church, featuring an ornate, sculptural crown that was designed by artist Carlos Torres in 1965.

One of the most popular attractions in downtown Puerto Vallarta is El Malecon, a 12-block seaside esplanade, rich in culture, entertainment, and history. All along the boardwalk are numerous installations of statuary, done in abstract and classical approaches, all designed to embellish the space and bring a unique energy to the mile-long attraction. El Malecon is known to have some of the best restaurants and nightlife in Puerto Vallarta, as well as souvenir shops featuring locally handcrafted treasures.

Dubbed the “Romantic Zone”, the area south of Rio Cuale (River Cuale) is a favorite with locals and visitors alike. The cobblestone streets will draw you in with their charm, while inviting shops and cafes will make you want to linger. With plenty of beachfront boutique hotels, bars, food, art galleries, shopping, and easy beach access, the friendly and diverse Romantic Zone will quickly become a preferred spot to spend all day and night.

Ecotourism is becoming a popular reason to travel to Puerto Vallarta because of its natural beauty and protected areas that offer breathtaking vistas and quiet reprieve from the energetic city. Los Arcos Marine National Park is one such protected space: out in the waters of Mismaloya Beach you’ll find a beautiful marine park, where diving and snorkeling are made more captivating by the large granite rocks that form underwater caves and tunnels. Another protected region is the El Salado Estuary, located in the middle of Puerto Vallarta and surrounded by the city. It is connected to the Pacific Ocean by a canal and its mangroves and salt marshes are home to a vast array of indigenous flora and fauna.

Rent a private yacht and go snorkeling at Marietas Islands National Park, located in front of Punta de Mita village. This grouping of small, uninhabited islands provides the natural environment for interesting and unique wildlife (like the Blue-Footed Boobie Bird and Humpback Whales) and was made famous by Jacques Cousteau’s visits; it is the perfect paradise hideaway to practice snorkeling. With guides and private tours available, this national park is a can’t-miss for your itinerary. Or consider chartering a luxury boat for a private fishing trip or exclusive encounter with wild dolphins.

During the high season (October through March/April), you will need to book activities as far in advance as possible in order to go on the tours you prefer and dine at the best restaurants. But when the rainy season comes, generally May through September/October, Puerto Vallarta empties out of tourists while remaining a playground of adventure and relaxation. A “low season” vacation means hot days, perfect for spa treatments or lounging poolside, and balmy summer nights where some of the city’s most popular dining spots can seat you immediately.
